Little Lodges on the Prairie Freemasonry Laura Ingalls Wilder eBook Teresa Lynn

This was an excellent book! I found out about it because they were giving away bookmarkers for it at Texas Grand Chapter, so when I got home, I decided to buy the Kindle copy. I have always loved the 'Little House' books, and I knew that Laura and Caroline Ingalls were members of Eastern Star--love you, Wikipedia! This book goes into the family's Masonic activity in great detail, showing the the lodge where they went and talking about the offices these family members held, and so forth. There were a lot more members in Eastern Star back in the late 19th century, so it was quite impressiive to me to learn that Laura served as Worthy Matron three times, in an era in which there were plenty of women in a chapter to choose from. It was also interesting to me that they did not seem to have the concept of 'going up the line' that we have today. Laura held positions all over the place, and not in what I would ordinarily regard as the 'proper' order for the line officers.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable to read, and I think anyone who is interested in Eastern Star and Freemasonry history will find it fascinating and informative.

Little Lodges on the Prairie Freemasonry Laura Ingalls Wilder eBook Teresa Lynn Reviews

Enjoyed this even more than I thought I would. Very accessible and interesting. Recommend for anyone interested in learning about Laura and her family, life on the frontier, freemasonry, or the Order of the Eastern Star.
I see why my girl friend enjoyed it.
This book is fantastic reading. It is one book that gives a clear and accurate view of Masonry and the Order of the Eastern Star. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who would like to know more about these beautiful fraternal organizations.
The breadth and depth of this book is truly impressive for it not only directly addresses the meaningful Masonic and Eastern Star membership of the Wilder family but provides extensive background to fully understand and appreciate the values of these organizations which became so important in their lives. The author has done a masterful job tracing history and buttressing it with photos of people, places and things. If you're only going to read one or two books a year about Freemasonry, you should certainly put this one on the list.
I received my book in good condition, and started reading it
immediately. It is well written and very informative. There are many
more historic documents relating to Laura Ingalls Wilder and her
relatives than I thought there would be, and the book is very detailed
in outlining what each member of Laura’s family did in Masonic Lodges
and Eastern Star. There is enough background information for it all to
make sense, without being overwhelming. Lynn shows the relationship
between the values of the Ingalls and Freemasonry, and ties it all
together with examples from the Little House books. I highly recommend
Little Lodges on the Prairie.

A wealth of information with dates, places and the offices held by Laura, her husband and her sister. Yes other reviews have stated that there was too much information just about what the Eastern Star is and what they do, but for someone who would know nothing aboout the Order, it is very imformative and interesting. I just skipped over some of it as anyone who is a member can easily do.
The scanned photos of ledgers and minutes was really wonderful, especially if you understand about them, but even if you do not they convey a sense of Lauras involvement and how active she really was.
Interesting to see another side to the Ingalls and Wilder families. The author gives a basic history of Freemasonry and the Order of the Eastern Star from her perspective as well. I wonder if these two societies have changed, if any, since these family members joined. I also wonder if they understood exactly who and what they were committing themselves to.
